The Bienville Parish Clerk of Court maintains and preserves the official records of the parish. The office is in Suite 1100 at 100 Courthouse Drive in Arcadia. Note the unusual hours: the office closes from noon to 1 PM and closes at 5 PM rather than the 4:30 PM standard at many Louisiana parishes. Records are also stored in a separate Records Library Building located opposite the courthouse. If you are doing in-person research, you may need to visit both locations.
The clerk was formerly listed as Eddie Holmes, with Sandy Settle as Chief Deputy. The office handles all civil, criminal, probate, and land records for the parish. It also supervises elections, election equipment, and election staff. The library-style record storage means historical documents are well organized and accessible to researchers with staff assistance.
The Bienville Parish Library at 2768 Maple Street in Arcadia is a separate but complementary resource. It may hold local historical materials that support genealogy research in the parish.

Genealogy Records Available in Bienville Parish
Bienville Parish was created on March 14, 1848 from Claiborne Parish. A courthouse fire occurred the same year, which destroyed some very early records. Records from 1848 onward, however, are reported to be in good condition. The Clerk holds marriage licenses, divorce records, probate and succession records, court records, and land records all starting from 1848. The primary repository includes land records (conveyances and mortgages), probate successions, civil and criminal court cases, and marriage licenses from parish formation.
Birth and death records are managed at the state level. Statewide mandatory registration began in 1914. Under Louisiana RS 40:41, birth records are confidential for 100 years and death records for 50 years. Only eligible parties such as the named individual, immediate family members, or legal representatives can access restricted vital records. Older records that have cleared these time periods are searchable through the Louisiana State Archives online index.
Note: Because Bienville Parish formed from Claiborne Parish in 1848, researchers looking for family records before that date should search Claiborne Parish holdings.
Louisiana State Archives and Bienville Parish Records
The Louisiana State Archives holds historical vital records that have passed the time limits set by RS 40:41. Birth records become public after 100 years and death records after 50 years. The Archives operates an Online Public Vital Records Index that lets you search older records by name from anywhere. For Bienville Parish, this index is useful for locating death records from the mid-20th century that are now old enough to be open to the public. The Archives building is at 3851 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.

What Bienville Parish Genealogy Records Contain
Marriage records in Bienville Parish document the names of both parties, their ages, their residences, their parents' names, the date and location of the ceremony, the officiant, and the witnesses. Land and conveyance records show grantor and grantee names, the legal property description, the transaction price, the date of the deed, and the notary and witnesses. Mortgage records show the same parties in a lending context, which also helps track property ownership patterns in a family over generations.
Probate and succession records from 1848 include wills, estate inventories, and lists of heirs, providing detailed views of a family's assets and relationships at the time of death. Civil court records capture disputes, property suits, and family law matters. Criminal records document charges and dispositions. Under Louisiana RS 44:1, the court and land records held by the Clerk are public records available for inspection. Once the time limits under RS 40:41 pass, older death certificates provide name, age, date of death, cause of death, birthplace, and parents' names. These record types together allow researchers to build detailed family trees reaching back to the mid-1800s in Bienville Parish.
